Brandon had one incident seven years years ago, not the 8 that Simon has had just in the NHL. Also as you quoted from Botta quoting Brandon, he called himself out in no uncertain terms. From the other articles I have read about the incident, he took the same tone about himself there as well. Doesn't seem like the appropriate chance to take with all the positive momentum of having the great draft and having Scott Gordon as the new head coach.
